Like a tasting plate at your favorite restaurant, there’s a little something for everyone on The Dimes latest EP “New England”.  Hinting at the historic concept album to come, frontman Johnny Clay has momentarily drawn the curtain back to reveal the growth of the band since the “Silent Generation”.  The incorporation of banjo, slide guitar and more dense melodies never overpower the strong tunes, only accenting Clay’s elegant wordplay and vocals which remain at the forefront of the band’s sound.  From a reverent take of John Lennon’s “Watching the Wheels” to the fireside majesty of “Ballad of Winslow Homer” an artist is clearly at work here. ~ fstbac, iTunes review

The Silent Generation (2007)

Just before they started recording their debut, guitarist Pierre Kaiser discovered a stash of Depression era newspapers hidden beneath the floorboards of his 1908 Portland, OR house.  Clay began reading the old papers, then writing songs about the colorful stories he discovered.  While the songs provide snapshots of a bygone America — an obituary of Emmy Destinn, the top opera star of her day; the tale of a man who survives a bullet to the head only to find that he can’t sleep, and stays awake for the rest of his life — the Dimes’ soft rock delivery is completely modern, investing the tales with the humanitarian romance of a Frank Capra movie… (click here for the full review) ~ j. poet, All Music Guide
